In Full: What can I say about 4U? For a part-time Cannois like me this is quite simply my social home. It's one of the friendliest places you're ever likely to meet. From the moment you walk in the staff are attentive and extremely welcoming and then the music begins to work on you, beat following beat, encouraging you to stay for far, far longer than you ever anticipate. It's at once hypnotic, fresh and breathtaking.

At this point I should declare an interest. For a long time I'd been coming to Cannes for business and pleasure. Then one night I stumbled across one of the four owners of this gem of the Riviera; Patrick. He said that while you're in Cannes 'you must come and check my bar' - well I've heard this line a thousand times before and almost always been let down and disappointed.

This was the real deal though. A bar - come club - come social hotspot. This is no tourist wasteland, from the moment you enter you know that you've found the pulse beat of Cannes. Locals arrive early on to partake in aperitifs and hors'doeuvres prior to their night time meal. They'll return after eleven to move and groove to the, mainly Mediterranean House, sounds of the retained DJs.

Then late into the night this music bar par-excellence comes into its own. The bar staff and owners make sure every guest feels welcome, working around the circular bar, entertaining and encouraging all to feel at home. I thought I'd found perfection in the cool nightspots of my hometown London's Notting Hill and Soho. But I was wrong. Here in the tourist mecca of the Cote D'Azur was something altogether better. Intimate, chic and vibrant. You won't do better, anywhere, believe me - I've tried.
